work. Burnout can occur for different, and sometimes opposite, reasons. Burnout from an
overload of work can come when employees feel overwhelmed with tasks at hand. In the same
way, employees can experience burnout when they feel like they are not challenged or doing
enough. This kind of burnout leads to employees losing interest and disconnecting.

Factors that cause burnout:

  • Having a heavy and demanding workload
  • Being in an unfair environment that exhibits favoritism
  • Working at an organization with values that are different from your own

When juggling the responsibilities of work and personal life, it can get difficult to draw a line between both. Maintaining a work-life balance looks like balancing the time spent on work with the time spent with loved ones and also time spent taking care of ourselves. This balance is essential because it helps us maintain our relationships with loved ones and helps us avoid
mental exhaustion from pouring ourselves into our work.

While we may think that working too much helps us reach our goals, it can actually have the opposite effect on us as it can negatively impact our productivity and also harm our personal life.

Signs of a poor work-life balance:

Here are 5 changes that you can make in 2023 to take care of your mental health:

1- Write it all down


Journaling has many benefits for our mental health since it’s an efficient outlet to pinpoint
negative thoughts and replace them with positive self-talk instead. It’s also a good way to
identify triggers and track progress. Journaling helps people write down their fears, problems,
thoughts, and concerns which serves as a form of stress-relief.

2- Identify triggers and distance yourself from them


Reflect on how you can preserve your mental health and about the factors that tend to deteriorate
it. Is it a specific group of people in your life that don’t benefit or build your character? Is it
harmful coping mechanisms that actually hurt you more than help you? Is it social media that
makes you spiral into a cycle of comparison? Whatever your triggers are, start thinking of ways
to create a barrier between yourself and those things. Distance yourself from people that block
your growth, slowly quit unhealthy coping mechanisms, or consider a break from social media if
you need to.

3- Look after your physical health


Taking care of your physical health will ultimately impact your mental health. Make sure that
you’re consuming your daily intake of water and the appropriate calorie intake your body needs
to function. Research shows that getting 8 hours of sleep, eating nutritious food, and moving our

physical health. You can adopt new habits like waking up earlier, switching to healthier

parking your car farther than your destination.

In order to create successful resolutions, you need to set goals that are specific and attainable.

There are several kinds of resolutions, and they can be centered around personal growth, social circles, health, or career. If you haven’t had any ideas yet, here are 5 ways to cultivate personal growth in 2023:

1- Develop self-awareness

Get to know yourself by taking yourself out, figuring out what you like/dislike, and giving yourself time to process emotions. Our phones have become pacifiers that make it difficult for us to sit with our emotions. Scrolling mindlessly for hours serves as distraction rather than entertainment, and this prevents us from processing emotions and thoughts. Make sure to take ten minutes to reflect or write in a journal using journal prompts online or the reflection questions posted at the end of every article. Journaling helps you identify your feelings and track your progress.

2- Aim for progress not perfection

People give up on their resolutions when they fail once. Your goals need to be shaped by a desire for progress rather than perfection, simply because perfection is unattainable. Focusing on your progress motivates you to keep going, while focusing on perfection discourages you. To grow, you need to realize that you are perfectly in process and that you deserve to be proud of yourself now rather than when you reach an end goal. This mindset makes you more likely to be consistent rather than give up.

Easiest way to escape the trap of comparison is to celebrate your own wins and reflect on all the good things that you have going on. Walking into 2023 with a thankful heart is a way to become a healthier individual. Research shows that being thankful can positively impact your mental and physical health. Rather than looking to others, water your own grass by using your past-self as a benchmark. Make it a habit to thank others regularly and write three blessings everyday, and watch how your attitude shifts throughout the day.

4-Talk less, listen more

Most people don’t practice active listening because they’re too busy thinking of how they’ll respond to the person speaking to them while they’re still talking. As a new year resolution, don’t just choose your words wisely but also listen to what other people have to say.  Not only will it increase your knowledge, but it will also prevent you from oversharing or saying something you might regret. It will also enhance your relationships with others because they will feel seen and cared for by you.

5-  Volunteer somewhere

They say that the most precious thing you can offer to someone is your time. Giving your time to a charity or an organization where you can volunteer to help is not only a way to help others but it also stretches you as a person. Volunteering to organizations in need will help you develop empathy and expand your worldview. It will also expose you to people that might not necessarily share your background or values, which will build your character.

Remember that life is not black or white, and if you fail at any of those things, you can always restart again. Starting on the 8th of May is just as good as starting on the 1st of January. All you have to do is just start.

Giving others a chance to share their input in meetings, even if we disagree with them, is the way to have effective communication. Fruitful and up-building conversations can’t happen if they’re only one-way. Interrupting others while they speak can come across as hostile and overbearing. 

4- Be considerate of time 

A lack of punctuality can show a lack of professionalism, whereas showing up on time shows that you value other people’s time. Not only being considerate in that aspect, but also being mindful of when you reach out to other coworkers. When you contact other coworkers, make sure that it’s at a time that is appropriate and convenient to them.

5- Respect staff room protocol 

Not just the staff room, but any shared space in the organization should be kept organized and clean. Honoring and respecting shared spaces looks a lot like cleaning after yourself. Shared spaces can also be documents, and they must be kept private as well. 

6- Greet everyone 

Greeting your coworkers can make you seem approachable to others, which will help you make friendly connections at work. When introducing yourself, make sure that you also pay attention to the other person’s name. 

7- Watch your language 

Not only does using rude and derogatory terms negatively impact relationships within the firm, but it’s also a negative reflection of the person and the organization as a whole. In addition to offensive language, make sure to avoid slang and maintain a formal tone when addressing other people in your organization. 

8- Be fully present 

Avoid using your phone during meetings, since others will assume you are uninterested. This can create hostility between coworkers, and hinder productivity and efficiency. To show interest, maintain eye contact and ask follow up questions.
